How To Play Against Maniacs

How To Play Against Maniacs

To be a successful poker player you need to adjust your style based on the tendencies of your opponents. Good poker requires you play the other players as much as the cards, and different players will react to what you do in different ways. No matter if you play free Texas holdem or risk your own hard earned cash one type of player you need to know how to play is the maniac.

What is a Poker “Maniac?”

Poker players are typically described along spectra of tight to loose and passive to aggressive. The more aggressive you are, the more likely you are to put pressure on your opponents with heavy betting. The looser you are, the more likely you are to enter pots and stay with hands, even without premium holdings. The maniac falls near the extremes of looseness and aggression. These players play many hands and bet them strongly. They are difficult to play against because they are always putting large portions of your stack at risk and they could be holding any two cards.

Kinds of Poker Maniacs

In the past, the maniac was considered a weak player, one who has money to burn and is happy to give it away. This is still true to some extent. However there are some loose aggressive players who have used this style more skillfully to be successful in poker, you will find lots of them if you play Texas holdem online. These players are commonly found in the online poker world but can be seen in live casinos as well. What differentiates these players is that they seem to have a great innate sense of when their opponents are strong and when they are weak and are able to lay down big hands almost as effectively as they are able to make big bluffs. If you are against one of these players, you may have a hard time. Fortunately, most maniacs are not that savvy and can provide you with an opportunity to win a lot of chips.

How to Play Against a Poker Maniac

First, you must try to play without fear. You must accept that you may end up with all your chips in against this player and they may win. This is poker and sometimes you are going to lose your whole stack. Once you accept this, it will make play much easier. That having been said, you don’t want to mix it up with the maniac with reckless abandon. This will nullify the advantage you have. Like a Judo master, you want to use your opponent’s strength against him. Wait for premium hands to bet, or even check your premium hands, let the maniac bet and flat call. If you hit your hand hard, continue to play meekly. The maniac is likely to be unable to resist betting when checked to, especially if the pot is getting big. Let him bet himself right out of the hand. Playing a wide range of cards and trying to hit draws will not be effective against the maniac since he will bet you off those hands long before you get a chance to make anything. Instead wait for your monsters and let him fall into the trap. With aggression the maniac will force you to make the decisions, which sometimes can be very tricky and requires skill. Recently a poker computer used aggression as a successful tool beating real opponents.

Other Notes about Poker Maniacs

Try to get the maniac on your left at the poker table. This will mean he will usually act before you, so you’ll know if he’s going to make an aggressive move at the pot before you get involved. This will also provide the situation you want when you have a good hand, with him acting first and betting and you meekly calling his chips away. Also make sure you are up against a maniac before acting on your impressions. If you are new to the table you may discover you are up against a player who has just happened to have a good run of hands and is more conservative than you expected.
