How to behave at the poker table

One thing that is rarely being discussed among players that spend most of the hours at the online poker table is the discussion about the necessary etiquette at the poker table. It might not be the number one priority among most players, especially not beginners, but it is actually important that you learn the basics on how to act around a poker table. Playing online poker will not teach you the “rules” for playing live poker.

You can say poker has created its own system for what you can do at the table, and what you can not. One main rule is that you should never ask your opponent to see his or hers loosing hand. This is of course allowed if they called on the river but it is not a thing you should do. By asking to see the players hand you are technically accusing them of cheating even though your intention is only to see what hand he was holding. It can also be disrespectful in the way that the other player might expose eventual mistakes for the rest of the table.

You should neither apologize if you win the hand. Everybody knows you are not sorry for it, even if you are very lucky in that particular hand.

There is another thing to think about when you are playing a tournament. If you knock your opponent out of the game, do not offer to shake their hand. It’s entirely up to that person to shake your hand.

If one of the players asks another player a question while they are in a hand, don’t get into the conversation or answer for that person. The reason is simple, usually the question is asked only for the reason to pick up tells from the other player, more than the answer of the actual question. You would then mess up their game by answering basically anything.

This is some of the main and most important things to think about when playing cash games or poker tournaments. There are also other situations which are not as strict for etiquette but still something to think about. For example if the dealer is showing a card of mistake, you should normally speak up so the dealer can call it a flash card.

If all players follow these rules you will find a poker game that runs smoothly and everyone will respect each other.
